Declan Devlin, PhD

About me

I am a cognitive scientist interested in how people process numerical information and develop mathematical skills.

My early work focused on understanding which skills comprise the construct of “early numeracy”, and which of these skills are most relevant to later mathematical achievement or the risk of developing mathematical learning difficulties. My PhD project focused on understanding how people process numerical order, with a particular interest in the role of familiarity and memory retrieval, and how these skills may contribute to arithmetic proficiency.

My current postdoctoral project focuses on the cognitive processes underlying non-symbolic quantity estimation. Alongside this, I am interested in understanding the nature of order processing deficits in developmental dyscalculia, and various other things!

Are these numbers in order?

Background

I completed my BSc in Psychology at the University of Sheffield (2017–2020). I then completed my PhD in Mathematical Cognition at Loughborough University (2020–2023).

Since then, I have held research positions at the Centre for Early Mathematics Learning at Loughborough University (2023–2024), and the Centre for Pain Research at the University of Bath (2025). I currently work as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Mathematical Cognition at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
